Managing Copyright in the Digital Information Landscape
“We are entering a new age of collaboration between publishers and libraries”, said Anthony Cond, Managing Director of Liverpool University Press, keynote speaker at the breakfast seminar which was hosted by the Copyright Licensing Agency [CLA] at the annual CILIP Umbrella Conference copyright on 3rd July.
Martin Snelling, the Resource Manager at the University of Manchester, argued that “copyright isn’t keeping up with technology”, particularly in the context of Virtual Learning Environments [VLEs] and the web. Snelling described the challenges facing the University of Manchester Library. He said that the absence of a defined copyright policy left academic staff ‘floundering’ when trying to find answers.
The Chair, Jo Warner-Howard, Head of Education at the CLA, said “The law is not out of our hands”, drawing attention to the work being done by the various groups and the way in which it is making real progress at practitioner and policy level.
The discussion concluded with an agreement that copyright awareness needs to be improved across the board.
