Since 1976, when the first Frankfurt Book Fair took place, a focus of interest or a guest of honour is announced for the fair. The hosts organise a dedicated literary program for this occasion which consists of TV programs, theatre productions, radio program, public discussion panels, art exhibition, and reading.
Furthermore, an exhibition hall is particularly set up for that particular guest country. The major publishing houses from the selected guest country are present as well. For the Frankfurt Book Fair of 2017, the focus of interest is French literature.

The purpose of the book fair

For the US and European book publishing industries, the Frankfurt Book Fair is primarily a trading as well as a professional meeting platform for booksellers, editors, librarians, publishing technology experts, and all those that take part in the creation, as well as the sale of books in its various forms. Moreover, the book fair is also a crucial event for the selling and purchasing of subsidiary rights; TV and movie rights, reprint rights for foreign book editions, and paperback rights, etc. Currently, there is no other book fair as big as this one that garners so much interest from media companies. Events The festival features various events, the most recent one being The Arts+ which was launched at the Frankfurt Book Fair of 2016. Not only is The Arts+ a fair in itself, but also an international meeting place and business event which encourages culture and creativeness. The purpose of the introduction of this format is to discover the potential of digitalising creative content further. This year as well, experts, opinion leaders, international artists, and new exhibitors will be displaying innovative approaches from fields of museums, brands, publishing, design, and architecture.
