This year’s IPG Autumn Conference is to be held on Thursday 14 November. The big news for us is that we are sponsoring this event and we are honoured to be doing so. The Autumn Conference has been a key date in the publishing calendar for many years, but this year’s conference is planned to be the biggest ever after being expanded to a day-long event. The conference is to be themed around Reaching Readers and will help IPG members find new and interesting ways to get closer to, and build relationships with, their customers and maximise their sales.
A packed programme of inspiring and practically-minded content will be first presented by this year’s keynote speaker and author Nick Harkaway, who will explore opportunities for independent publishers to reach their customers through digital channels including blogs and social media. Author of books including "The Blind Giant: How to Survive in the Digital Age", Nick will set the scene of the conference with a thought-provoking and exciting overview of the fast-changing market.
Some of the other sessions prior to lunch include two informative case studies of reaching readers, from Tim Williams of Edward Elgar Publishing and Kate Wilson of Nosy Crow. Delegates will also learn how efficient supply chains smooth the path to sales, with contributions from Colin James of Penguin Random House, Roger Miah of Epub Direct and our very own Managing Director, Andy Cork.
Sessions after lunch start with advice from social software consultant Suw Charman Anderson on publishers’ social media strategy. The rough topic of global pricing will then be explored with the help of Chris Bennett of Cambridge University Press and Lee Harris of Angry Robot, before the conference is concluded with thoughts on the importance of partnerships from Matt Haslum of Faber & Faber and Kevin Price of Bafta, providing an insight from beyond publishing.
In addition to the day's scheduled proceedings, the day shall also include the launch of the 2014 IPG Independent Publishing Awards, several opportunities during the day to network and a post-conference drinks reception.
